La casa de la cultura was inaugurated in 1987. It is placed in downtown and on the same block where sesquicentenario's monument is. Some years a go this building was "El Viejo Mercado".In 1879, Lindor Laurentino Quiroga and Simon Lucero suggested the construction and exploitation of a central market which would provide several benefits for Villa Mercedes' citizens. This central market was aimed at being a turning point in the development of local ecpnomy. People were able to buy homemade food, meat, fruit and vegetables.
Celebrating San Luis' Literature: "Antonio Esteban Aguero"
Antonio Esteban Agüero was born in Piedra Blanca on February 7, 1917 and died in San Luis on June 18, 1970. He graduated in Master National Normal school " Pascual Pringles "of the city of San Luis.
His most popular pieces of work: Canciones para la voz humana (1973), Un hombre dice a su pequeño paÃs (1972). In 1960 the newspaper Clarin of Buenos Aires gave to the poet the Sesquicentennial Award of the Revolution of May due to his poem "A man tells his little country", by unanimous vote of the three jurors: Jorge Luis Borges, Enrique Larreta and FermÃn Star Gutiérrez. In 1970, Antonio Esteban Agüero received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa Post-Mortem of the National University of San Luis
